Why the ×7 rule doesn't hold up
A 1-year-old dog isn't 7 in human terms — they're already close to 15, having gone through adolescence and reached physical maturity in a fraction of the time a human does. By age 2, most dogs are roughly equivalent to a 24-year-old human. After that, aging slows down and levels off into a more gradual yearly increase — but the rate of that increase depends heavily on size.
Why size changes everything after year two
Small and medium dogs tend to age more slowly in their middle years, which is part of why smaller breeds often live longer overall. Giant breeds age faster per year after maturity, which correlates with their typically shorter average lifespans. This is the part the old ×7 rule completely misses — it treats a Chihuahua and a Great Dane identically, when their aging timelines are genuinely different.
